classically cool

photos: Annie Burch

This outfit was previously featured on the Fashion Magazine Style Panel which you can see here.

One of my favourite pieces I own is my black leather jacket. I scored it at a Salvation Army when I was eighteen, which is about six years ago. It had a broken zipper so the price was really reasonable. I had the zipper replaced at a tailor and have been wearing it season after season ever since. It goes with just about everything, but feels most at home with a t-shirt and jeans. The classic look. I'm sad to say it is about time to put it away and replace it with a parka for the next few months (I'm being optimistic here), but I will see it again come spring.

Kerrie

fall florals

photos: Annie Burch

Welp, I know fall is here, but I thought I had better post this before it is truly not appropriate for the season - hey, it's above seasonal temps here in Edmonton! My boo and I took a trip to Montreal this spring, and though I heard the vintage shopping was amazing, the only thing I scored was this 1960s dress. I'm not too upset, because a) I'd rather have one great piece than several average pieces and b) I had more money to spend on food & drinks, which was half the reason we went in the first place. Seriously, do yourself a favour and go to Montreal right now. The silk is in great shape and the groOoOvy blossoms are so vibrant; this dress will likely hold court in my wardrobe for years to come.

best vest

photos: Annie Burch

I wish I knew where my love of leopard print began; it seems to be a part of me at this point. That being said I could not say no to this vintage Mr. Donovan plush leopard print vest at Goodwill (for, like, $6). Mr. Donovan, or later known as Donovan's, was an Edmonton based high fashion womenswear store that was open from the '60s until 2009. I like to imagine the vest belonged to someone's ultra sassy grandma who also loved leopard print and lots of gold costume jewelry. One day I too will leave behind a legacy of leopard print and costume jewelry, so until that day comes I am going to enjoy it all and wear it because if I'm not then who will? It's a sign of respect to the former owners, really.

pink matter

Fall is now undeniably here. With the season comes the luxe textiles that one generally avoids during summer. Knits, suede, felt and leather are welcome come September, so why not wear them all in one ensemble? Layering different pieces of different textures creates a look that you can really fall in love with, no? (SORRY)

chic

Having a little black dress in your arsenal is a style staple. Having several is a great way to minimize bad outfit days. This vintage LBD (which I think is from the '60s) has so much character with its peter pan collar, bow and little buttons down the front which makes it the star of the outfit.

ZOOlander fashion show

photos: Diana Truong

The other week I had the opportunity to attend the Ark Project's ZOOlander Fashion Show Fundraiser at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. It was a black and white themed evening (in honour of the Zoo's Grevy's Zebras) with local fashion, art, food and even runway appearances by some of the Zoo's tractable animals. I really loved the ability to explore the Zoo after hours as I got to see some animals that are usually hiding from the hordes of ogling humans during the day. A first event of its kind, the evening brought out some of Edmonton's finest for mingling and schmoozing but also education about the Zoo and its revitalization and conservation efforts. This is not the storyland zoo of your youth, Edmontonians. Admittedly, I did not snap enough photos of the stylish crowd pre-show as I was pretty busy watching baby meerkats roam around their enclosure but rest assured, almost everyone brought their sartorial A-game and stayed with the black & white theme. The highlight of the evening for me was when a calf was brought down the runway and I whispered to my date, Diana, "how funny would it be if he pooped on the runway?" which he proceeded to do MERE MOMENTS afterwards (obviously I took a photo). Shortly after the show wrapped up the evening was cut short by some drastic weather changes, but if you have not been to the zoo in ages I recommend taking a trip down there before the snow falls to enjoy the exhibits and gorgeous river valley.

Thank you to the Edmonton Valley Zoo and the Ark Project for your gracious hosting of this event!

summer lovin'

photos: Tessa Lee

Something about full skirts make me feel like I'm in Grease and that is A-OKAY by me! This lil vintage gem was given to me by Tessa (who also took these photos, gracias amiga!) and we enjoyed pretending I was Ariana Grande (okay, I enjoyed it but she played along) when we took these photos. Summer is almost over, and damn it I am hanging on to it by a thread. I hope everyone enjoys the last weeks of the season!
